Description
The title of the volume references the thirteen moons in the lunar year, its thirteen menstrual cycles, reflected in the thirteen sections of this book. Throughout, the woman poet explores the composition of the moon-through outer and inner space, cyberspace, mythology, history, music, science, mathematics, literature, and language itself-, and this process is figured as the book's ars poetica. The speaker, then, is a kind of lyrical astronaut, tracing a rebellious and iconoclastic cartography, a new genealogy of the moon, along with a history of moon-gazers, moon-worshippers, spacewalkers, hysterics, and lunatics. Poets, in sum, chasing after the "Grail of flow, prophecy and answer, word and Stone, / divination."
